On the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the European Muslims League wishes to reflect not only on his importance for Muslims, but also on the extraordinary human and moral legacy that his life and teachings have left to humanity.
More than fourteen centuries have passed, yet the values he taught remain profoundly relevant: mercy, peace, justice, solidarity, generosity, respect for human dignity and care for the weakest.
The Qur’an describes Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with words that summarize the universal dimension of his mission:
“We have sent you only as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Qur’an 21:107)
A mercy not limited to one people, one ethnicity or one social group.
His life teaches us that faith must be reflected in character and conduct.
The Qur’an says of him:
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
(Qur’an 68:4)
Muhammad ﷺ taught respect for parents, neighbours, the poor, orphans, travellers and those in difficulty. He encouraged generosity, forgiveness and reconciliation and condemned injustice, arrogance and oppression.
His teachings also remind Muslims of their responsibility towards people of other faiths.
The Qur’an establishes a fundamental principle:
“There is no compulsion in religion.”
(Qur’an 2:256)
And it teaches Muslims to act with kindness and justice towards those who do not fight them because of their faith:
“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and just toward those who have not fought you because of religion nor driven you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
(Qur’an 60:8)
These principles are particularly important today.
In a world marked by wars, divisions, religious hatred, racism and growing polarization, remembering Prophet Muhammad ﷺ should not mean simply looking back at history.
It should mean asking ourselves what his example can still teach us.
His legacy calls us to replace hatred with dialogue, selfishness with solidarity, revenge with forgiveness, arrogance with humility and indifference with responsibility towards others.
Peace, altruism, compassion and love for one’s neighbour are not signs of weakness. They are among the strongest foundations upon which a just society can be built.
For Muslims, loving Prophet Muhammad ﷺ means above all trying to live according to these values.
For those who are not Muslims, the anniversary of his birth can also be an opportunity to discover a historical and spiritual figure whose teachings have shaped the lives of billions of human beings and whose message cannot be understood through stereotypes, extremism or the actions of those who betray his teachings.
The European Muslims League believes that knowledge is one of the most effective answers to prejudice.
Muslims, Christians, Jews, believers of other religions and people without religious faith do not need to become identical in order to live together.
We need to know one another, respect one another and protect one another’s dignity.
This too is part of the immense legacy left by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: the responsibility to transform faith into good character, words into actions and our differences into an opportunity for peaceful coexistence.
More than fourteen centuries after his birth, his call to mercy continues to speak to our common humanity.
A mercy for the worlds. A legacy for generations. A responsibility for us all.
