In recent years, Nigeria has continued to face violence that indiscriminately affects both Muslim and Christian communities. Among the groups responsible for numerous attacks is Boko Haram, an extremist organization that has caused thousands of deaths, destroyed villages, attacked places of worship, and kidnapped men, women, and children.
Reports show that the victims of these atrocities do not belong to a single religious community. Both Muslims and Christians have paid a very high price as a result of violence, terrorism, and insecurity affecting various regions of the country. Particularly alarming is the practice of kidnapping for ransom, through which families are forced to pay money in exchange for the release of their loved ones.
The European Muslims League (EML) reiterates that no form of terrorism can be justified in the name of Islam. The Islamic faith teaches respect for human life, justice, mercy, and the protection of innocent people. Those who kill civilians, abduct individuals, or spread fear among the population betray the fundamental principles of the religion they claim to represent.
Commenting on the situation, Alfredo Maiolese, President of the European Muslims League, stated: “In our view, groups such as Boko Haram use religion as an ideological cover to pursue power and financial gain. When people are kidnapped in order to obtain money through ransom payments, it becomes evident that we are not dealing with genuine religious motivations, but rather with forms of organized criminality that exploit religious symbols and references to legitimize themselves. Islam cannot be associated with such practices, which harm both Muslims and Christians and undermine peaceful coexistence between communities.”
The European Muslims League renews its appeal to national authorities, African regional organizations, and the international community to strengthen measures aimed at protecting civilian populations, combating armed groups, and supporting victims of terrorism. At the same time, it is essential to promote interfaith dialogue and cooperation between Muslim and Christian leaders in order to isolate all forms of extremism and build lasting peace.
