The European Muslims League joins the voices of the OIC, the Muslim World League and the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue
Genoa, Italy 16 September 2026
The European Muslims League (EML) joins the voices of leading Islamic and interfaith institutions in reaffirming the inviolability of Makkah, Madinah and holy sites, in light of recent developments that have raised concern over the security of Islam’s most sacred places.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the attacks against Makkah and the Madinah Region, reiterating the need to safeguard the security of holy sites and those who visit them.
The Muslim World League (MWL) has likewise expressed its firm condemnation, emphasizing the importance of protecting holy sites, mosques and the safety of worshippers.
The Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID) has also condemned any act that may threaten the security of Makkah or endanger pilgrims and visitors to the Grand Mosque, Al-Masjid Al-Haram.
DICID further emphasized a principle of universal significance: holy sites and places of worship must be protected from conflict and violence, and their protection constitutes a shared religious, humanitarian and moral responsibility.
The European Muslims League fully shares this principle.
STATEMENT BY ALFREDO MAIOLESE, PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN MUSLIMS LEAGUE
“Makkah and Madinah represent an invaluable spiritual heritage for Muslims throughout the world. Their sanctity, as well as the safety of pilgrims and worshippers, must never be endangered by conflict.
But the principle we defend must be universal. A mosque, a church, a synagogue or any other place where people peacefully turn to God must never become a target of violence or war.
Protecting holy sites also means protecting human dignity. At a time of profound international tensions, religious institutions have a particular responsibility: not to deepen divisions, but to defend peace, dialogue, mutual respect and the sanctity of human life.”

President – European Muslims League
The European Muslims League therefore joins the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Muslim World League (MWL) and the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID) in reaffirming that the protection of holy sites, places of worship, worshippers and civilians constitutes a shared religious, humanitarian and moral responsibility.
EML calls upon religious institutions and the international community to uphold this principle consistently, regardless of religion or location.
Holy sites must remain places of prayer, encounter and peace. Never theatres of conflict.
