In an increasingly fragmented international landscape marked by tensions, conflicts, and growing divisions, the need to rethink the actors of peace has become more urgent than ever. Peacebuilding cannot remain the sole responsibility of States and major international organizations. Local institutions, communities, and municipalities must also play an active and visible role.
It is within this framework that the third edition of “Kick War Away – Un Calcio alla Guerra”, promoted by the European Muslims League (EML), will take place in Genoa, Italy, in September 2026.
This new edition introduces a significant and innovative dimension: the direct involvement of municipalities from Italy and abroad, invited to formally join the initiative as promoters of peace, without any financial obligation.
Each participating city will be symbolically represented through two key moments: the “International Team of Municipalities,” where one player will represent each city, and the “Global Peace Run,” where a runner will carry the name and identity of their municipality. In cases where cities are unable to send participants, the organization will ensure representation, preserving the inclusiveness of the initiative.
This is not merely a sporting event. It represents a concrete model of grassroots diplomacy, where municipalities become ambassadors of dialogue, cooperation, and shared responsibility.
Previous editions have already demonstrated the strength of this approach, with the participation and patronage of numerous local authorities, confirming that territorial institutions can play a crucial role in promoting a culture of peace that is both authentic and participatory.
The 2026 edition aims to further expand this network, involving cities from different continents. Some international municipalities have already expressed their support, confirming that the language of sport and solidarity is universal and capable of overcoming political, cultural, and geographical barriers.
At a time when diplomacy is often perceived as distant from citizens, initiatives such as “Kick War Away” send a clear message: peace is not only declared at the highest levels, but built collectively, starting from communities.
