22 August – European Muslims League
On 22 August each year, the United Nations has proclaimed the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.
This day serves as a reminder of the many men, women and children who, in different parts of the world, have suffered persecution, discrimination or even death simply because of their faith or spiritual conviction.
Freedom of religion or belief, freedom of opinion and expression, and the right to peaceful assembly are fundamental rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Protecting them means strengthening democracy and building more just societies based on mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, we still witness violence against individuals and religious communities: attacks on places of worship, persecution of minorities, and discrimination in workplaces and social life. United Nations Member States have reaffirmed that no act of terrorism or violent extremism can ever be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group.
On this occasion, the European Muslims League (EML) joins in remembering the victims and renews its commitment to promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue, rejecting all forms of hatred and discrimination, and defending the right of every person to live their faith in freedom and security. We believe that only through mutual respect and collaboration among diverse communities can lasting peace be achieved.
The commemoration of 22 August is not only about remembrance, but also a call to action. Every society, institution and individual has the responsibility to contribute to a world where no one should suffer because of their religion or belief.
The European Muslims League invites everyone to observe this day with reflection, prayer, and concrete commitment against intolerance and in favour of the promotion of universal human rights.
