Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina has for centuries been an essential part of the country’s cultural and spiritual identity. Introduced during the Ottoman period, it gave rise to a civilization rich in art, culture, and spirituality that contributed decisively to shaping modern Bosnia. The Muslim presence has never been a source of division but rather a factor of harmony and balance in the heart of the Balkans, where Christians, Muslims, and Jews have long lived and cooperated together.
After the tragedy of the 1990s war, which devastated cities and communities, the revival of Bosnian Islam meant much more than rebuilding mosques and places of worship. It was a moral, social, and civic rebirth. The Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina, led for many years by Grand Mufti H.E. Dr. Mustafa Cerić, succeeded in restoring faith and hope to a wounded people, promoting an Islam of peace, tolerance, and dialogue.
A distinguished figure of European Islamic thought, H.E. Dr. Cerić combines traditional theological education with a modern vision of faith. After studying at Al-Azhar University and earning a doctorate in Chicago, he devoted his life to promoting an Islam capable of dialogue with the West, of embracing European culture, and of responding to the challenges of our time. As Grand Mufti and spiritual leader, he encouraged cooperation among religious communities and the defense of human rights, opposing every form of extremism.
His name is now associated not only with the religious renewal of Bosnia but also with the moral reconstruction of the entire Balkan region. For this reason, the European Muslims League (EML) has designated him Ambassador of Peace, recognizing his unwavering commitment to coexistence, tolerance, and human dignity. Through his example, the EML reaffirms the need for a European Islam that contributes to peace and social cohesion, placing faith at the service of humanity rather than power.
In many international addresses, H.E. Mufti Dr. Mustafa Cerić has emphasized that “peace is not the absence of war, but the ability to live with justice and mutual respect.” This vision lies at the heart of EML’s mission, which promotes in Europe a culture of dialogue and fraternity, fostering encounters between religions and communities.
Today Bosnia and Herzegovina stands as an example of resilience and balance, where Islam represents a constructive force for society and for European integration. The work of H.E. Mufti Dr. Mustafa Cerić, Peace Ambassador of the EML, remains a living testimony to how faith can become a means of reconciliation and progress, and how the message of Islam — founded on mercy and justice — can shine as a light for the entire European continent.
