On 18 July, on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, the European Muslims League (EML) pays tribute to one of the most influential figures of modern history in the defence of human dignity, justice and reconciliation.
Beyond religious and cultural differences, there are universal values that bring people together and promote peaceful coexistence. Among these are justice, forgiveness, respect for human dignity and the ability to overcome hatred without abandoning the pursuit of truth.
The Qur’an reminds believers that Allah commands justice and excellence (Qur’an 16:90) and calls upon them not to let hatred prevent them from acting justly (Qur’an 5:8). It also teaches that forgiveness and reconciliation are noble virtues whenever they help restore peace among people.
Nelson Mandela’s life demonstrated that the pursuit of justice should never become a desire for revenge. After many years of imprisonment, he chose dialogue and national reconciliation, proving that moral strength can overcome hatred and open the way to a better future.
On the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, the President of the European Muslims League (EML), Amb. Alfredo Maiolese, stated:
“Nelson Mandela reminds us that a person’s true greatness is not measured by the power they hold, but by their ability to transform suffering into hope and justice into reconciliation. As Muslims, we are called to be witnesses of peace, to reject every form of hatred and to build bridges of dialogue among peoples. Mandela’s example shows that forgiveness is not weakness, but one of the highest expressions of moral strength and human dignity.”
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught:
“The strong person is not the one who defeats others in wrestling, but the one who controls himself when angry.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This teaching calls every believer to responsibility, self-restraint and the pursuit of peace without abandoning justice.
The European Muslims League renews its commitment to promoting dialogue, the rule of law, mutual respect and cooperation among people of different cultures and religions, convinced that peace is built every day through good example and service to the community.
