On April 30, 2025, the President of the European Muslims League Dr. Alfredo Maiolese delivered a significant address on the importance of religious diplomacy in fostering global peace and mutual respect. Speaking in an institutional setting, he reaffirmed that Islam stands for peace, coexistence, and dialogue among nations and cultures.
Religious Diplomacy as a Mission: The Role of the EML in Fostering Dialogue Among Nations

We live in delicate times, where divisions between cultures, religions, and peoples appear to be widening. In this context, the need for authentic religious diplomacy is more urgent than ever—diplomacy that builds bridges, promotes peace, and fosters mutual respect.

The European Muslims League (EML) has been committed to this mission for many years, acting both as a recognized NGO and with the responsibility and seriousness of an international diplomatic organization.

The EML represents European Muslims who embraced Islam, often coming from other faith backgrounds. These are men and women born or raised in Europe, deeply attached to their nations and societies, and who know and embody European values, working to promote coexistence and social justice.

However, the EML does not limit its efforts to Europe. Its diplomatic network operates across the globe, with Peace Ambassadors present in more than 73 countries, including 21 in Latin America alone. The most distant representations are found in New Zealand, South Korea, and South Africa, and—within Europe—Iceland. This demonstrates our international vocation and our commitment to involving all communities, regardless of borders.

Through this network, the EML actively monitors Islamophobia, promotes interfaith and intercultural dialogue, and builds relationships of trust with civil and religious authorities. We firmly believe that today, more than ever, a collective effort is needed to unite people, to overcome fear and prejudice, and to focus on what brings us together.

Our efforts have been recognized by leading international bodies, including the Council of Europe, the International Parliament for Safety and Peace (IPSP-WOS), and the IADA – International Academy of Diplomatic Action.

A particularly meaningful recognition came from the International Association of Missionaries of Political Charity, a pontifical right organization, which has invited the EML several times to participate in high-level discussions and dialogue tables with institutional and diplomatic representatives. This is a clear sign of appreciation and respect for our work and reinforces our role in religious and cultural diplomacy.

As President of the EML, I emphasize that religious diplomacy is an essential part of our identity. Alongside me, our Secretary General Yvonne Ridley, a globally known journalist and human rights advocate, plays a vital role in coordinating international activities and diplomatic engagement.

Together with her, our Vice Presidents and all Peace Ambassadors carry out the mission of the EML with dignity and dedication. Their local presence allows us to maintain direct contact with governments, religious leaders, and institutions. While the EML is neither a state nor an intergovernmental organization, our representatives enjoy real recognition by the communities they serve. They are often trusted and respected leaders, acting with balance, authority, and responsibility.

In this sense, our Peace Ambassadors act much like envoys or special delegates, representing the values and vision of the EML through informal yet effective diplomacy—based on respect, dialogue, and trust built in the field.

This message is also addressed to our Christian, Jewish, and other faith-based friends, and to all those who believe in fundamental human values: the EML is a home open to dialogue, where spirituality and responsibility come together to serve the common good.

Religious diplomacy is not a title—it is a service.
We carry it out with love for Europe, for all peoples, and for peace.
