Yesterday, 20 June, the world observed World Refugee Day, an occasion that draws international attention to the situation of millions of men, women and children who have been forced to leave their homes due to war, persecution, violence and humanitarian crises.
For Muslims, welcoming and protecting those seeking refuge is not only a humanitarian responsibility but also a principle deeply rooted in Islamic tradition. The history of Islam itself reminds us of the importance of the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions, who were received with generosity, solidarity and protection by those who welcomed them.
Today, in many parts of the world, millions of people continue to live far from their homeland, separated from their families and deprived of the basic conditions necessary for a dignified life. Faced with such suffering, believers are called upon to demonstrate mercy, solidarity and compassion without distinction of nationality, ethnicity or religious affiliation.
The European Muslims League (EML) renews its appeal to governments, religious institutions, humanitarian organizations and civil society to work together in ensuring protection, assistance and opportunities for those who have been forced to flee. At the same time, it is essential to address the root causes of forced displacement by promoting dialogue, justice and peace.
Alfredo Maiolese, President of the European Muslims League, stated:
“Every refugee carries a story of suffering, but also a story of hope. As believers and as citizens of the world, we have a duty to look upon these people with compassion and responsibility. Welcoming those in need, protecting human dignity and working for peace are values that belong not only to Islam but to the entire human family.”
On this occasion, the European Muslims League invites Muslim communities and all people of goodwill to remember those living in exile in their prayers, asking Allah the Almighty to grant them safety, protection, serenity and the opportunity to return to a stable and dignified life.
