On the occasion of World Oceans Day, the European Muslims League (EML) wishes to draw the attention of Muslims and the wider global community to the importance of protecting the seas and natural resources that Allah has entrusted to humanity as an amanah (sacred trust).

The Holy Qur’an invites human beings to reflect upon the signs of creation and the blessings derived from the sea. Allah the Almighty says: “And it is He who has subjected the sea for you to eat from it fresh meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships ploughing through it so that you may seek of His bounty and perhaps be grateful” (Qur’an 16:14).

The oceans are among the greatest blessings granted by Allah to humanity. They provide food, facilitate trade among nations, contribute to the planet’s climatic balance, and stand as a manifestation of Divine power and mercy. Today, more than 80 percent of the world’s trade by volume is transported by sea, demonstrating the essential role that oceans play in the economic and social life of humankind.

Islam teaches respect for the environment and condemns all forms of waste and corruption on earth. Allah says in the Qur’an: “Do not cause corruption upon the earth after it has been set in order” (Qur’an 7:56). The pollution of the seas, the destruction of marine ecosystems, and the irresponsible exploitation of natural resources are all practices contrary to the spirit of stewardship and responsibility taught by Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught respect for nature and for the resources created by Allah. In an authentic hadith, he said: “There should be neither harm nor reciprocating harm,” a principle that Islamic scholars have also applied to environmental protection and the preservation of the common good.

The President of the European Muslims League, Alfredo Maiolese, stated: “For a Muslim, protecting the oceans is not only an environmental issue but also a religious and moral duty. Allah has entrusted the earth to us so that we may preserve it with wisdom and responsibility. Protecting the seas from pollution and irresponsible exploitation means honoring one of Allah’s greatest blessings and ensuring a better future for coming generations. Every believer is called upon to be part of the solution through responsible behavior, avoiding waste and promoting respect for creation.”

The European Muslims League calls upon Muslim communities across Europe and around the world to promote environmental awareness initiatives, reminding everyone that gratitude to Allah is also expressed through the care and protection of the world He has created.
